I propose the UMC Candlelighter's calendar be redesigned with pictures for each month showing
something relating to the children & some area of the hospital.
I certainly understand this project involves businesses & money & that it is a money raising effort.
My concern is that the reason this calendar is being offered is lost in the politics of satisfying egos.
This calendar is about children & the hospital that serves them.
These children are sick & injured & their faces & stories should be on every page, not on the back, facing the wall.
Put the names of the sponsors of the calendar on the back where they belong.

Each month should contain pictures of the children along with information about the specific condition which
brought them to the hospital. Perhaps include a paragraph from an interview with the child &/or parent.
Or, give some information about a particular disease & have pictures of a child with this disease.
Doing this lets the people who are paying for the calendar gain insight to what's going on in the lives of the patients.
It educates them about hospital services & treatments which enables them to tell others about Mississippi's only children's hospital.
There could be a picture & story about Dr. Batson or the two new floors just recently added to the hospital.
With these pictures there should be information about the functions & services of each of these floors & units.
There should be pictures of the cancer clinic, the bone marrow transplant unit, radiology, the Ronald McDonald House,
the treatment rooms, Sickle Cell day, MRI rooms, CT scan rooms, play rooms, stem cell harvesting machines, the i.v. poles
& pumps that the children use, etc. You get the idea.
I've modified our calendar at home so that the picture hanging above the days of the month is the picture of the children.
Click here to compare "theirs" to "ours"...

Please don't think I'm not appreciative of the time, money & efforts that it takes to get the calendar done every year.
I'm very grateful for it. I simply wish the focus would be more on the reason the calendar exists & less on things that
shouldn't really matter much at all.
